Finger Lakes Activities for Kids

Strong National Museum of Play

Let your curiosity guide you through the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester. Your kids will want to stay at this fun and interactive museum all day long, especially since there are so many activities to squeeze in! Your child will love riding the historic carousel and passenger train or taking part in the hands-on exhibits.

Then, explore nature in the butterfly garden or enjoy quiet time in the designated quiet area with a book nook and calming aquariums. The Museum of Play is a must during your FLX vacay!

Corning Museum of Glass

Looking at glass might not seem exciting for a child – but what about making glass? The Corning Museum of Glass makes it possible with glassmaking demonstrations and interactive glassblowing sessions!

The best part? It’s fascinating and fun for kids and adults of all ages! Besides creating your own tumbler cups, ornaments, pendants, beads, and sculptures, you can also visit exhibitions that are sure to have you thinking about glass in a whole new light.

Finger Lakes Ice Creameries

When the weather warms up in the Finger Lakes, I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! That’s why there are so many options for ice cream shops around the lakes.

Have you ever tried custard made from duck eggs? You can try this unique, frozen treat at Spotted Duck Creamery between Keuka Lake and Seneca Lake. We think it’s a lot richer and creamier than your typical custard, but you be the judge!

For an adults-only sweet treat, make your way over to Montezuma Winery and Hidden Marsh Distillery in Seneca Falls. They make wine-infused ice cream that you just need at the end of a long day!

Where to Experience the Top 5 Winter Activities in the Finger Lakes

By: Zakary Klick

Wintertime in the Finger Lakes is a quiet time of year, but it is not without plenty to do. The area has many attractions for winter enthusiasts and all of them have the beautiful Finger Lakes backdrop. The air is crisp, the snowscape stunning, and the silence, serene. Having worked in the region for nearly 25 years, we at Finger Lakes Premier Properties have taken the time to sufficiently compile a list of the top 5 wintertime activities and where best to partake:

#5 – Snowshoe the Trails
Finding yourself close to the east side of the Finger Lakes? Snowshoe to the frozen Taughannock Falls near Ithaca along Cayuga Lake! Taughannock Falls is the tallest gorge in NYS with numerous trails. Coupled with the natural beauty of the area, strapping on snowshoes is a fun way to explore the Finger Lakes in the winter! For a guide to more trails throughout the region, visit GoFingerLakes.org.

Vacation Rentals in Close Proximity to Taughannock Falls: Blue Heron Lodge and A Shore Thing

#4 – Ice Fishing
Some of the best fishing in the Finger Lakes is in the winter. Keuka Lake, in particular, is famous for this style of fishing, especially for lake trout, rainbow trout, brown trout and landlocked salmon. Despite the shifty winter the last few years, the tip of Keuka Lake (in Penn Yan) typically freezes over for locals to enjoy the winter tradition during the first few months of each year. Book a vacation home along this section of the lake, drop a line, and experience Finger Lakes fishing in icy fashion!

Vacation Rentals on the tip of Keuka Lake (Penn Yan):  Cedar Lodge and Brandy Bay Serenity

#3 – Experience 2300 Degrees
Experience one of the most popular events at the Corning Museum of Glass. At 2300 Degrees you’ll be impressed with hot glass shows, live music, local wineries and brewery tastings, meet & greets with the artists, and more! This event is held on the third Thursday of each month, November through March, click here for more details.

Vacation Rentals near the Corning Museum of Glass: Seneca Fun & Sun and Absolutely Shore

#2 – Sip & Savor
Our region is home to over 100 wineries and breweries, and the winter happens to be one of the best times to get the complete tasting experience. With reduced traffic during the colder months, don’t be surprised if the person pouring your samples is the owner and winemaker. Take advantage of their extra attention by asking them about their favorite wines and places to visit. You’re sure to get some terrific local recommendations. To plan your winter wine tour, check out the local wine trails: Keuka Lake Wine Trail, Seneca Lake Wine Trail, and Cayuga Lake Wine Trail.

Vacation Rentals with Close Proximity to Wineries: Crystal Palace and Sails and Sunsets

#1 – Shred
If you love to ski and snowboard, a visit to Bristol Mountain Winter Resort is a must-stop with 138 acres featuring 35 slopes. Or, if you’re looking to try something new, book a private class or lessons with their seasoned experts. Great for all ages!

Vacation Rentals near Bristol Mountain Winter Resort:  Family Affair and South Bristol Cottages
