Wineries
Visiting wineries is one of the most popular activities for visitors todo in the Finger Lakes. They offer the opportunity to taste fine wines in the second-largest wine-growing region in the country, with over 130 wineries within a one-hour drive radius. Many wineries also offer cellar tours, vineyard tours, cafes and restaurants, picnic areas, art galleries, and unique wine and gift shops.
The Finger Lakes region has a grape-growing and winemaking history dating back to the 1860's. It is one of America's oldest commercial wine regions, and is home to native, French-American, and vinifera (European) varietals, with a wine industry that is growing and expanding every day! This area has been so successful with grape growing due to its unique microclimate. 10,000 years ago Ice Age glaciers carved and sculpted this beautiful land, leaving behind gentle rolling hills and deep valleys, some of which became the Finger Lakes. The air around the lakes is softer and milder, keeping it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, enough to give the grapes an ideal growing climate, much like the fine wine regions of France and Germany. Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc are some of the top varieties grown here.
Wineries around Canandaigua, Keuka, Seneca and Cayuga have organized wine " trails" with their own brochures, special events, and other activities to conveniently welcome visitors. You'll need a car, or a driver, to get you around in wine country. The majority of wineries are located on the roads that ring the lakes, but some are off smaller roads, and even dirt roads in some cases. They are very well marked however, and if you just look for the grape signs, you'll find them!
The Finger Lakes region is known for having world-class wineries, but the fun doesn't stop there. There are some incredible breweries and distilleries in the area that are worth a visit. Find a full list in our free Vacation Guide when you download it!

Handcrafted, Traditional, German Style Wines
Born in Zell Mosel, Germany, Winemaker Hans Peter Weis traveled to the United States on a quest to pursue his passion and discover the world. However, his travels were cut short when he stumbled upon his home away from home in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Finding the minerality of the soil and climate similar to that of home, he is able to pursue his passion of handcrafting traditional German style wines for all to enjoy.
